CASAA Podcast Update March 23, 2015

CASAA's Jan Johnson and Alex Clark discuss legislative- and advocacy-related matters of current interest to CASAA members and THR (tobacco harm reduction) advocates.

50 - Texas: Hearing 3/24/15 at 8:00 a.m. (with an organizational meeting 3/23/15). Kuods to the Texas SFATA chapter for rallying the troops. Many have set up laptops and tablets in their stores to allow customers to easily participate in the Call to Action.

20 – Oregon flavor/use ban 3/23/15.

07 – Indiana HB 1432 would be devastating, and efforts to offer reasonable amendments have been rebuffed. Email being sent to Indiana residents asking them to reach out to legislators to ask them to vote “no.”

50 – California. A counter-campaign launched by a California advocate via social media to combat California Department of Public Health’s #stillblowingsmoke campaign. CDPH has a $75M budget, and while we can’t compete against their print, television, and outdoor advertising, right now vapers own the social media space.

30 – Madison, Wisconsin considering an ordinance to redefine e-cigarettes as a tobacco product in order to catch up vapor shops in zoning issues (e.g., can’t be located within 1000 feet of schools and can’t be located within 500 feet of another tobacco retailer).

40 – Brockton, MA City Council meeting 3/23/15 re legislation that would ban sales to minors, but no details are available.

40 – FDA Call to Action to submit comments regarding December 2014 workshop. We have an incredible amount of expert knowledge in the community regarding hardware and liquid, and we need to share it with FDA.  If you submit a document, they are legally required to read it. The CTA includes an instructional video at the end. You have until April 15, 2015 to submit comments on this workshop.

00 – New York needs to be alert because we’re expecting legislation to start moving in the near future.

50 – Hawaii CTA updated for a hearing 3-23-15. Hawaii Vapers United has developed a tool that helps vapers submit written testimony easily.

10 – Cleburne, TX – 03/24/2015 - Public Hearing at 5:00 pm re ordinance that would allow businesses to prohibit or allow smoking on their property, but currently doesn’t separate out e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes. Potentially problematic for businesses that wish to allow e-cigarette use but not smoking.

00 – A bit more about social media aspects of California Department of Public Health’s campaign. They’re partnering with Tinder, a matchmaking mobile app.

00 – El Cerito, CA 4-15-15, anticipating an ordinance that would prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products, zoning issues.

13 – Princeton, NJ, 3-26-15, 7:30 p.m. Board of Health meeting first reading of an ordinance to raise the age to purchase to 21. Many municipalities do not post proposed ordinances for review in advance.
