CASAA Podcast Update August 31, 2015

CASAA's Jan Johnson and Julie Woessner discuss legislative- and advocacy-related matters of current interest to CASAA members and THR (tobacco harm reduction) advocates.

1:30 - VapeBlast (San Antonio) - A shout-out to the organizers for making advocacy an important part of the event and working hard to drive traffic to CASAA. (And a special shout-out to Keith Holt (Texas SFATA) who made a point of walking around the event and helping people join CASAA.)

2:40 - California Call to Action has been updated. The California SFATA Chapters and Not Blowing Smoke are working hard to defeat the anti-e-cigarette bills introduced during California's special session, and we encourage people to follow those organizations for the most up-to-date information. In the meanwhile, it is important that Californians continue to call and email their legislators to express opposition to these bills.

3:20 - Call to Action for HR 2058 is still active. If you haven't already done so, please respond to the Call to Action now and ask your federal representative to support the Cole bill. While changing the grandfather date isn't an ideal long-term solution, it is definitely necessary at this point and will give us time to demand a better legislative solution for genuinely beneficial regulation. Jan and Julie discuss why the grandfather date is such an important issue and its effects on the availability of vapor products.

6:40 - Call to Action for Chicago - The City of Chicago is considering, among other things, a tax on e-cigarettes and other tobacco products in order to generate revenue as a solution to budget woes. Town hall meetings to discuss the budget are set for this week: Wednesday, September 2nd (6:30 p.m.) at South Shore Cultural Center and Thursday, September 3rd (6:30 p.m.) at Wright College. Please (1) try to attend one of these meetings, and (2) call and email your alderman. Full details provided in the Call to Action.

8:25 - CASAA's Testimonials project now contains more than 5,000 personal accounts about how e-cigarettes and other low-risk alternatives to smoking have helped people quit or reduce their smoking habit. EVUN (European Vapers United Network), which is a coalition of various European consumer groups, is now hosting its own testimonials site for European vapers. (A big thank you to Stefan Didak, who created a customized plug-in for CASAA to showcase its testimonials. We're grateful that he made that same plug-in available to EVUN.) EVUN is busy collecting testimonials and preparing translations for instructions. CASAA, EVUN, and others are working cooperatively to create an international testimonials site where participating groups will be able to copy their testimonials to provide an international voice.
