CASAA Podcast Update January 18, 2016

CASAA's Jan Johnson and Alex Clark discuss legislative- and advocacy-related matters of current interest to CASAA members and THR (tobacco harm reduction) advocates.

0:18 - NYC Anti-vaping rally (#NoEcigs4Kids) attended by Alex Clark (CASAA), Gregory Conley (AVA), Jeff Stier (Upper West Side resident and outspoken harm reduction advocate), and various NYC retailers and consumers. If you would like to attend anti-vaping rallies near you, please feel free to reach out for tips on how to respectfully represent an opposing view - takeaction@casaa.org

4:35 - Local Alert: Athens-Clarke Co., GA - County Commission meeting, January 19th, 2016. Take action to oppose an indoor vaping ban.

6:08 - Local Alert: El Monte, CA - (2nd Alert) Ord. 2871 - Aggressive place ban ordinance for vapor products.

6:55 - General discussion about the scent of vaping and rather the ridiculous response  by NY Asm. Linda Rosenthal on a New York City sidewalk.

11:15 - Florida Call to Action! HB 1143 would ban vaping in the same places (and more) where smoking is currently prohibited by the FL Clean Indoor Air Act. This bill will be discussed and likely voted on in the Health Quality Subcommittee on January 19th, 2016. This bill will likely pass through this committee as there will be at least two more committee hearings for this bill before it goes to consideration by the full House.

15:25 - Durations of legislative sessions vary by state and from year to year. Some states will have shorter sessions in which carryover bills will move quickly through the process.

17:10 - Brief discussion about US S.1129, ‘‘Tobacco Tax and Enforcement Reform Act’’ (Sen. Blumenthal [D-CT]). This bill is not currently a threat, but discussion is warranted because the definitional change would include vapor products in the tax equalization as a result of the FDA Deeming Regulations.

21:50 - Support HR 2058 - At the time of this podcast there are 41 co-sponsors on HR 2058. CASAA has updated our call to action on this issue to include a “thank you” campaign for advocates living in districts represented by a co-sponsor. Full list of co-sponsors is available here.

23:15 - Residents living in Kentucky and West Virginia will see efforts to enact a tax on vapor products this year. CASAA will be monitoring the situation and will issue calls to action as details emerge.
